Is It Time to Review Your Hiring Process?

New employees are the future of your company, so it’s important to have a seamless hiring process to spot the right people — and fast. As one of the top staffing agencies in Las Vegas, PrideStaff Las Vegas knows this is often easier said than done.

If you’re not completely pleased with the caliber of talent joining your team, your hiring process might be to blame. Here’s a look at a few common indicators that something needs to change.

Three Signs It’s Time to Review Your Hiring Process

Top Candidates Keep Dropping Out

When filling open positions, things always start out on a high note. Your company has no trouble attracting A-list talent, but you can’t seem to keep them onboard for the duration of your selection process. Maybe you get them in the door for an interview or perhaps they’ve already moved on by the time you make the call — either way, something has to change.

It’s likely your hiring process is either too long, too tedious or both. Take a closer look to determine where exactly in the process you’re losing top talent, then make changes accordingly. If possible, try to get new hires and/or those who dropped out of the running for a job to complete an anonymous survey on their experience.

Most Positions Take Months to Fill

Rushing through a hiring process just to get someone — anyone — in place as quickly as possible is never a good idea. However, if it typically takes months to hire a new employee, this is a problem.

You’re likely missing out on top talent because of this long wait, as the best candidates are in demand. If your competitor extends a great offer first, it makes sense they would accept it — even if they were more excited about the opportunity at your company — because they’re ready to make an immediate career move.

Turnover Rates Are High

Having some level of turnover at your company is inevitable. However, if most resignation letters come from relatively new employees, you’re likely choosing the wrong people.

Review the candidate screening steps you’re taking to determine what you’re missing. For example, you might give people a skills test or have them meet with more team members in their second interview.

Are You Meant for Remote Work or In-Office Work?

Remote work has become more common than ever as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many companies have opted to continue with having employees work from home full-time or a hybrid model (i.e. one to two days a week), which means when applying for new jobs, you have a new decision to make regarding your preferred workplace. Determine if remote, hybrid, or in-person is the best fit for you by considering the following factors:

Home Work Setup

The type of home/work setup you have can help you decide just how practical it would be to work remotely. A dedicated workspace with the appropriate technological needs for your work and a quiet environment free of distractions is essential for working from home.

Personal Work Style

Think about how you work best to figure out what would be the ideal workplace for you. Does it trigger your anxiety or make you frustrated to be interrupted by people popping into your office unannounced throughout the day? Remote work would likely be a better fit. Do you thrive on the energy of being physically around your colleagues? Then an in-person environment may work best for you. Or alternatively, if you like both in moderation, hybrid may be the solution.

Nature of Your Job Duties

Consider the specific tasks you handle on a daily basis and how easily they can be done at home versus requiring to be in an office. For example, deeply focused solo work may be more effective at home, while collaborative duties may need to be in person. The nature of your job duties can help guide you to whether you’re meant for remote, hybrid, or in-office.

Communication Preferences

The ability to effectively communicate, whether it’s with your coworkers, boss, or clients/customers, is a make-or-break factor for your job performance. Your own communication preferences, along with those for whom you would be working with, can determine the right workplace for you. If email or instant message is an effective means of communication for your needs, remote or hybrid may be a good fit, whereas a desire for face-to-face meetings may necessitate an in-office presence.

Tips for Hitting Your Career Goals in 2022

With the New Year officially here, it’s prime time to assess your career and start setting goals for the year ahead. If you have some professional targets insight but aren’t quite sure how to hit them, where do you begin?

While the past couple of years have been challenging, the good news is there are many interesting and rewarding opportunities available that didn’t exist a few years ago. So, if you have big plans, here’s how to make them happen:

Set concrete goals.

You want to get a promotion at work or find a new job. These are great goals to have. However, you need to dig deeper and define the details of your goal. In other words, turn these vague thoughts into actionable steps you can follow on your path forward.

Make sure they’re realistic.

If you want a leadership position and you’re an entry-level employee, then this might not be a realistic target to shoot for. It can certainly be a long-term goal. However, achieving these larger objectives requires short-term, micro achievements first. To do that, make sure your plan for 2022 is doable. Otherwise, you’ll become disillusioned and scrap it altogether.

Develop your strategy.

Now that you have solid goals in place for the year ahead identify how you will achieve them. Do you need to start networking and polishing your resume before you begin a job search? Does it make sense to talk to your boss about stretch assignments and opportunities for advancement? Whatever your goal is, work backward from there, outlining the exact steps to take to accomplish it.

Tell a friend or family member.

When you discuss your goals with others, this makes you accountable. You’re less likely to push off the work or procrastinate as a result. You’ll also have someone to talk to about any struggles or frustrations you’re facing as you’re working toward achieving your goals.

Re-assess and make changes mid-way.

In a few months, take some time to check in with yourself and your goals. What have you accomplished? Do you need to add in steps or remove some? Has your situation changed in some way? Spending some time mid-year evaluating your plan and making necessary adjustments can ensure you remain on track and reach your goals for 2022.

Mindfulness Tips for Your Career in 2022

Why be mindful?

You may be asking: What exactly is mindfulness?

Or, your initial reaction may be, “I can’t do that. I’m too anxious.” And that’s exactly the point. Mindfulness practices can help you better regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety and depression, focus your attention, and observe your thoughts and feelings.

Mindfulness is an act of consciously focusing your mind in the present moment without judgment or attachment to that moment. It can help you become more aware of what’s going on for you both internally and externally, as you become more present to the “right now.” You can learn to be mindful at anytime, anywhere, while doing just about anything.

Practice Makes Perfect

Unless you’re a prodigy at something, you can’t perfect your knowledge of it in a single lesson or day. Mindfulness is no exception: it takes practice. But the positive results are well worth the effort. Here are a few ways to make it work for you as you grow in your career:

  • As you wake up, focus on how you breathe. Take a few deep breaths and observe how you feel. This will help calm your mind and avoid feeding your thoughts first thing in the morning. It will also help you learn more about your breathing so you can observe how it shifts at various points during the day.
  • Journal for a few minutes each day. Write down whatever comes to your mind: tasks, ideas, thoughts, feelings or whatever. Don’t overthink it. Journaling is a great way to find peace of mind and reflect on how you feel or handle different situations.
  • Practice meditation. Meditation is key to connecting your breathing to your body. There are several guided apps you can use to get started.
  • Take a few minutes to do something you love. Before or after work, or during a break, doing something you truly enjoy will help you stay more focused on everything in your life, in a state of steady flow.
  • This activity, too, should be enjoyable. If you don’t like running, don’t run. Choose yoga, a spin class, or simply taking brief – or longer – walks. Listen to your body and appreciate how it feels before, during and after your practice.
  • Spend time outdoors. Step outside during break or lunch, even if only for a few minutes. This will help you recycle your energy and feel lighter.
  • Listen with no judgment. Actively listening to someone is perfect mindfulness practice, as it requires you to be fully present. Observe how the other person behaves and what body language they use, as well as hearing what they say. Ask questions to clarify any unclear points and make the other person feel heard. At the same time, observe any feelings or emotions the conversation incites in you, again without judging.
  • Take conscious breaths often. This is something very simple and free, and it will help you ground yourself in the present moment. To go a step further, try a breathwork session where specific exercises are taught. It can have a profound effect on your mind and well-being.

New Year, New Career! PrideStaff Can Set You Up for Success

The start of the year is a great time to start job searching since many employers have fresh hiring budgets and positions to fill. Are you ready to pursue a new career in the new year? Check out the ways PrideStaff can set you up for success:

Find New Unlisted Opportunities

When you apply for an online posting you found on a general job board, it is very likely you will be competing against dozens (possibly even hundreds) of other applicants. Even if you are highly qualified, you may have difficulty getting noticed by the hiring manager. However, employers who work with our staffing firm to fill their positions don’t advertise these openings elsewhere; therefore, if you partner with PrideStaff for your job search, you will find new unlisted opportunities to which you otherwise never would have had access.

Saves You Time and Effort

Searching for jobs to apply to requires you to devote a significant amount of time and effort, but when you’re trying to change careers, it can be even more challenging to track down potential leads in a new area. PrideStaff can streamline the process and help you be more successful with your search without as much time and effort on your end. We will determine what type of transferable skills you have that would be an ideal fit for the positions our clients are trying to fill and match you accordingly.

Build Your Experience

A common hurdle to overcome when changing careers is lacking experience or skills in a specific area necessary for qualifying for new positions. Temporary employment can get your foot in the door more easily to a new field. Many employers turn to PrideStaff to fill short-term vacancies, such as vacation coverage or special projects with predetermined end dates. You can build your experience and boost your resume through temporary employment opportunities by working with us.

Receive Expert Advice

It can be difficult to get hiring managers to take a chance on you when you’re trying to change careers. However, it is very likely that you have transferrable skills from your previous employment that have prepared you to excel – you just have to know how to demonstrate that effectively to hiring managers. Our team of staffing experts works directly with employers, and so we know exactly what they are looking for in candidates and can give you advice on how to best present yourself as you pursue new lines of work.

What are the Most Effective Ways to Find and Attract Great Employees in Modesto?

Welcome to 2022 … and a talent market in Modesto, across the state and nation, and around the world, that has changed drastically in the face of Covid-19. Power has shifted from employers to employees, and it looks like this picture won’t be changing anytime soon.

It hit like a tidal wave with the Great Resignation of 2021, when people began leaving their jobs in droves – realizing new priorities and seeking greater work/life balance as they dealt with coronavirus and its impact.

But all is far from lost as this new year dawns. There are effective ways to recruit the most placeable candidates (MPCs) on the market. Think healthy company culture, hiring from within, optimizing your social media presence, and building brand ambassadors and a strong candidate database.

5 Ways To Attract Top Staff in Modesto

Great culture wins the talent war.

Top talent demands a workplace that has a brand, mission and values that resonate with them personally. Strong organizations define and understand their unique culture and align it with their business priorities, including attracting MPCs.

  • The best candidates tend to ask questions about your culture, such as “How will I learn and grow in this role?” or “what does this company stand for?”

Look for MPCs within your own company.

In addition to seeking top talent outside your organization, consider whether any current employees might be looking for a change and would make a good fit for one of your open jobs. You already know them, their strengths, and their value. And they already know your company and culture. Plus, it’s a means of retaining a good performer who may otherwise leave to pursue a similar opportunity elsewhere.

Ramp up your social strategy.

Reassess your social media recruitment strategy. Are you on the right platforms, engaging in conversations and making contributions where desired talent will relate to your brand and engage with you?

  • Encourage sharing. Ask your current employees and contacts to share your job postings with their networks. Provide content, images and videos that depict your winning culture.

Develop a team of brand ambassadors.

Employees with a strong connection to their company culture show higher levels of engagement – and are more likely to refer friends to their organization. Fuel this behavior by creating a brand ambassador program where passionate team members can represent your company and accelerate positive social buzz. Reward employees who help you find future hires.

Deepen your candidate pool.

The last thing you want to do right now is receive a strong resume from a desirable candidate, but reject it because it’s not a perfect fit for a role you need to fill. Perhaps you can create a role. But if not, build a database to hold onto these quality applications. Stay engaged with them and revisit your talent pool regularly to see if the right opportunity is there to start the hiring process.

Tips for Helping a Struggling Employee Get Back on Track in 2022

The New Year ahead is a great time for a fresh start. If someone on your team is struggling, it’s an ideal point to hit the reset button and try to get them on track. Where do you begin? Here are some tips for helping them improve their performance in the New Year:

Set up a one-on-one.

Before the end of the year, set up a one-on-one conversation with your employee. It’s a good time to make sure you’re both on the same page. Explain the issues you’re seeing and the impact they’re having, but also give your employees time to provide their own insight and thoughts on the difficulties they’re facing. This will help ensure you have a handle on all the details and context, so you can create an effective plan forward.

Take a casual approach.

A talk with the boss is always a stressful situation for any employee. Try to make it as easygoing as possible by changing the venue. Go out for coffee or a drink after work or take them to lunch. This will help you both open up and be honest in a more comfortable and casual environment.

Ask about what you can do to help.

Be clear about the problem you’re seeing. But also ask what you can do to help. Perhaps there are issues going on at home that you don’t know about, and a more flexible schedule is the answer. Or, if you’re giving your employees projects that are above their level of expertise, they might need more training.

Make a plan.

Once you’ve had a conversation and you’ve both voiced your concerns, create a plan for how to tackle the issue together. Whether it’s through training opportunities, pairing them with a mentor, or re-assigning different tasks or shifts, make sure you’re both onboard and feel positive about the steps you’ll take moving forward.

Monitor performance.

As time goes on, be sure to check in with them to see what progress they’re making. Also, ask about any additional struggles or concerns, so you can deal with them together before they escalate.

Being open, honest, and empathetic is the best way to handle an employee who’s having a hard time. You’ll be able to get them on track in a way that doesn’t demoralize them.

The Importance of Company Culture in 2022

Everything from an organization’s mission and core values to the work environment and overall behaviors and attitudes exhibited by employees and leadership contributes to a company’s culture. Since it can heavily influence overall job satisfaction, candidates are increasingly more selective in deciding which job offers to accept based on the culture of the prospective employer – particularly in the current labor market that favors job seekers. Learn more about the importance of company culture in 2022:

Retention

A positive company culture not only attracts prospective candidates but is also more likely to keep them from leaving. By focusing on cultivating a culture in which employees feel valued, they will be more committed to your company and less likely to resign. Improving your retention rates not only saves time and money, but it also continues to strengthen the culture you’ve built.

Productivity

When company culture is lacking (or even worse, if it’s negative), it can cause a steep decline in productivity. When employees don’t feel supported or connected to their colleagues and leadership, it may take longer to get things done because of a lack of teamwork.

Morale

It can be difficult for employees to feel motivated if they are unhappy with the day-to-day energy in the workplace. Prioritizing your company’s culture can boost morale, which not only improves overall job satisfaction but also encourages teamwork that makes employees able to perform at high standards in an enjoyable manner – in turn, this fosters their mental and emotional wellness.

Engagement

When employees are content with going to work each day because the culture is positive, they generally end up having higher rates of engagement. Engaged employees feel a deeper sense of connection and commitment to their employers and get personal satisfaction from going above and beyond with their work.

Branding

When you put in the effort of creating a positive company culture, it not only pays off in the short term by making prospective candidates more likely to accept your job offers, it can also help your company’s long-term success by strengthening its branding. Many customers/clients want their money to go to companies that are known for treating their employees well – even if their products or services aren’t the lowest cost. Building your employer brand will also continue to help you attract top talent with less effort due to your positive reputation.

Overcoming Age Bias in Your Job Search

Age bias represents a serious problem for job seekers over 40. One study showed that nearly a quarter (21%) of workers in that age bracket have faced discrimination. At the same time, more than a third (36%) thought they have been barred from a position due to their age.

Meanwhile, the issue gets worse as the birthdays mount. By 50, the number of workers noticing that their careers have been impacted by ageism reaches 58%.

Of course, it’s up to employers to strip their hiring processes of any hint of prejudice. But in the real world, you have to deal with an ingrained societal bias against older workers. What can you do?

Here are a few steps you can take to overcome age bias in your jobs search:

Continually Update Your Network

Hopefully, before you even start a formal job search, you’ve done some work to smooth the transition into your next opportunity. If you find yourself without a job, you want as many options as possible. In other words, you want a strong network to rely on when you need a new position. This will give you the inside track on potential career advancements, sidestepping much of the casual ageism that can impact a job search.

This takes active cultivation. Even if you have what feels like a stable position, put effort into expanding your network. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Don’t get complacent. Realize that even a job you’ve held for decades can end suddenly.
  • Engage younger colleagues. Build connections with coworkers from other generations. You’ll expand your horizons and make connections that can come in handy someday.
  • Be a mentor. Generously share your experience with others. As an older worker, this provides a currency you can use to enrich your network.

Downplay Your Age on Your Resume

Yes, ageism is wrong. But your resume doesn’t provide the right forum to confront it. To make sure you don’t become the victim of prejudice, downplay your age early in the application process.

This doesn’t mean you should lie about your age. Rather, you should avoid drawing attention to the length of your career. Consider tips like:

  • Don’t include dates for your education
  • Focus on up-to-date skills
  • Don’t detail ancient work history

Don’t Become a Stereotype

Ageism comes about because of specific stereotypes. Small-minded hiring managers assume older workers can’t operate the newest tech, that they are set in their ways, or that they will demand outsized salaries based on outdated experience.

Given these prejudices, you need to take extra care to avoid living up to stereotypes. Instead, you should:

  • Keep Up with Industry Trends
  • Stay Proficient in the Latest Technology
  • Emphasize Your Recent Experience
  • Stress Your Interest in New Opportunities

Remain Flexible About Your Career Path

Given the challenges older workers find in the workplace, it’s important to remain flexible about your options. A rigid approach will likely lead to frustration. Instead, stay open to potential opportunities wherever they come up.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you launch your job search:

You may have to take roles that feel like a step back. You’ve probably reached some heights in your career. After a certain point, however, you can’t expect an unbroken path upwards. Be ready for lateral moves or even a step back if necessary.

Keep learning new skills. Even if you’re out of work, you can continue to expand your set of capabilities. This will keep your resume fresh and broaden your potential job pool.

Consider part-time or freelance work. Embrace the gig economy. By leaning into situations other than full-time employment, you can get your foot in the door, build your resume and expand your network.

Is 2022 the Year for a New Job? Here’s How to Tell

Want a more fulfilling job? Ready for higher pay or better benefits? Are you interested in switching out of your industry completely? Whatever your specific situation, a New Year is a great time to reflect and think about making a change. If a new job is in order, then it’s also the ideal time to prepare for your search.

Yet, what if your next dream role is right under your nose – with your current employer? By leaving, are you also letting go of all that tenure plus generous benefits? If you have a job, you don’t love, but with a company that’s great to work for, perhaps it’s as simple as an internal promotion or new assignment.

But how can you tell? If you’re at a crossroads, here are some questions to ask yourself to identify your next step.

Am I too comfortable in my job?

If you’re afraid to make a move, is it because you’re worried about change? Are you bored yet comfortable at the same time? If you’re feeling stagnant in your job, then it’s a good time to consider a move that can expand your horizons. Otherwise, your career – and your skills – will grow stagnant.

A new job, on the other hand, can stimulate you in many ways and provide the opportunity to gain different abilities, meet new people, and work on more interesting projects. So, if there’s no room for upward mobility at your current company, then it’s time for a change.

Is there a job I want at my current employer?

If you look at your boss’s job and think, “that’s what I want to do,” then you’ll have a good indication of what to look for in your next role. However, if there’s a certain job outside your department or even your area of expertise that you want – but still within your company –find out how to snag it. Start by talking to your boss. Explain what’s going on and that you’re looking for more of a challenge or different assignments. Many companies love promoting from within, so it could be an ideal opportunity for your employer, as well.

Is compensation more than fair at my current job?

If your company offers above-average compensation, great PTO, generous benefits, and other perks, then it’s certainly worth sticking around to see if you can simply move up at your existing employer.

If, however, their compensation is lacking and not changing any time soon, this is just another great indicator that change is in order.

In the end, only you know what’s right for you. There are so many factors to consider beyond simply upward mobility and compensation, such as the work culture and your relationships at your company, as well commuting time, whether you can work from home and more. It’s why taking the time to seek out other opportunities within your company is often a good first step. If, however, you’re deeply unhappy for reasons that won’t be changing in the near future, then a New Year is the ideal time for a fresh start.
