Expert Tips to Tailor Your Resume for Maximum Employer Attraction
It’s not unusual for hiring managers to receive hundreds of resumes for a single job opening. And increasingly, before your resume even reaches a decision maker, it’s likely to be screened by applicant tracking system (ATS) software. An ATS is often the first step in narrowing down the number of candidates who will remain in the race, before interviews are even scheduled.
So, how do you make sure your resume stands out and makes the final cut? The solution lies in tailoring its content to each position you apply for, with an eye on specific keywords found in the job description.
Start by reviewing the job description.
Of course, you’ve already read it. But comb through the job description in detail and as you do so, jot down keywords and requirements specific to the position.
Next, compare that content to your existing resume.
Highlight those elements that do – and do not – match the job description. This way, you will know which wording to leave in or further emphasize, and which to delete for purposes of this specific application.
Time to update!
Each time you apply for a job, you need to complete this process and update your resume accordingly. Throughout the document, starting with your summary and including your education, skills, and work experience sections, focus on those keywords and the qualities that make you an ideal candidate.
- Include measurable results. Using bulleted list, include quantifiable data to demonstrate your experience, achievements, and impact. This is a meaningful way to illustrate the value you will add if hired. For example, rather than saying you “developed a successful email campaign,” tweak this statement to read, “developed an email campaign that netted a 15 percent monthly increase in sales.”
Delete whatever is not relevant.
Remove any information that will not affect an ATS or recruiter decision. If it’s a challenge to fill the space, remember: being concise is a plus. And, you can always use formatting to make your resume more attractive to read.
About that formatting …
Reformat your resume if necessary to draw attention to the most important details. There are numerous ways to do this including bold, italic or underlined text, proper spacing, and tasteful pops of color. The right use of white space also makes your resume more professional and reader friendly.
Proofread. Then proofread again!
Yes, you may be a bit tired of reviewing your resume at this point, but never overlook proofreading it when you’ve completed your editing. Then, read through it one more time or, better yet, have a trusted friend, or coach do it. Your perseverance will pay off!

Embracing Diversity: Gaining a Competitive Edge Using Inclusive Employment
“Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.” (Winston Churchill)
How do you celebrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) at your company to benefit everyone and grow your business in today’s competitive market landscape?
Provide Broader Perspectives
Embedding DEIB into your culture fosters a more positive, innovative environment. This in turn breeds creativity, loyalty, productivity, and profitability.
- Reach a more extensive talent pool. Businesses that focus on DEIB find they can tap into a vast talent pool that they may otherwise have missed. In a recent study, 70 percent of job seekers said they considered diversity a key factor in evaluating prospective employers. Among Gen Z candidates, this percentage is even higher. The more diverse your team, the more diverse your talent pool becomes, boosted by their referrals.
- Improve business decision-making. The more the makeup of your organization reflects your community and the world at large, the greater the likelihood that people’s decisions will benefit not only each other, but also your customers and other stakeholders. This comes from developing an employee base that represents various genders, races, ethnicities, and walks of life and giving them ongoing opportunities to contribute in a safe, welcoming environment.
- Outpace your competition. Results of another research study show that businesses with diverse teams are 33 percent more likely to outperform their competitors in profitability. In today’s global marketplace, both employees and customers seek out organizations that reflect their values and perspectives.
DEIB: Spelling It Out
Diversity in the workplace refers to the differences that exist between people. Simple, but profound. And critical because diversity brings different perspectives, ideas, and experiences to the table and helps you create a work environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and supported.
- Achieve diversity by implementing inclusive hiring, promotion, and staff development policies. For instance, adopt blind resume screening processes to remove potential bias. Employee resource groups and diversity training programs are also very helpful.
The terms “equity” and “equality” are often used interchangeably – but there are notable differences. Equality refers to treating everyone the same, regardless of their backgrounds. Equity, by contrast, focuses on providing fair treatment and access to resources, based on individual needs and circumstances. In other words, equity recognizes that people may have different needs and need different levels of support to achieve the same results.
An inclusive workplace is one where everyone can participate in contributing to business success. And diversity, equity, and inclusion all contribute to belonging, which is critical to employee engagement and development. Why? Because when people feel they belong, they are more likely to be motivated and stay loyal to their company and its future.
