These Jobs are Considered “Recession Proof” in 2024

man looking down at paper

According to a recent economic model reported on by Yahoo Finance, there is an 85 percent chance of a recession in 2024. This is the model’s highest reading since the Great Financial Crisis of 2008.

Sobering news to be sure. What might this mean for your job, or your job search, this year?

Despite how unpredictable the economy may be, there are numerous careers that tend to remain stable, regardless of how the financial market is doing. They include these specific roles within various sectors:

Health and Human Services

Healthcare professionals in general are always needed, regardless of economic fluctuations. This includes all but those whose role may be limited to elective procedures, which could be postponed when times get tough. You’re generally on solid ground in healthcare, however, especially as a doctor, nurse, hospital administrator, or:

  • Pharmacist
  • Physical therapist
  • Mental health provider, or
  • Hospice worker

Animals, as well as humans, also always need care. So, veterinarian jobs remain stable during times of financial decline.

Related jobs that also tend to be unaffected by economic ups and downs include social workers and senior caregivers, medical and otherwise, as well as funeral home directors.

Government and Law

Even though there may be occasional shutdowns, governments still need to function, even in the face of economic challenges. So, you can typically count on stability working as a federal employee or in the military.

Judiciary professionals – including judges, clerks, bailiffs, sheriffs, and those working at bail bond companies – are also in fairly recession-proof roles, as are attorneys; namely, those who specialize in bankruptcy or divorce.

First Responders

The sad truth is that crime and related emergencies tend to increase during recessions. So, first responders become more critical than ever. Specific recession-resilient roles include firefighters and law enforcement personnel.

Public Services

Your job will likely be secure, even during a recession, if you work for a public utility or transit system. The latter category includes bus drivers, conductors, ticketing staff, and maintenance employees.

Information Technology

As the world continues to shift into online, digital mode, the demand for IT professionals will continue to grow, regardless of the economic outlook. This applies to most IT roles.

  • Developers, who create software and maintain critical IT systems, will always be needed. Even if publishers are less likely to in vest in new creative projects during a recession, developers will still be essential to work on existing software.

Insurance and Risk Management

Whether you work as an appraiser, an underwriter, or a sales agent, insurance is generally a recession-proof industry.

The same holds true for actuaries, who analyze risks. In fact, actuaries tend to be in higher demand when times get tough, as they help determine how potentially risky different investments may be.
